Camp’s regular “Quarterly” meeting.  Sunday, 2 p.m. at the Blount County Public Library in Maryville.

Nancy McEntee, PhD will be our speaker. She has written a book about Major Webster Colburn, stationed in Knoxville in 1865 and throughout Tennessee with the Army of the Cumberland. As a quartermaster, he supplied Generals Wilson, Buell, Thomas, and Rosecrans armies, handled thousands of dead and dying mules and horses, dug up the dead at Fort Pillow, and took over the confederate canons on Missionary Ridge after the Battle of Chattanooga.

You may go to amazon.com and preview the book, Haversacks, Hardtack, and Unserviceable Mules.

We will host the Department of Tennessee Encampment.  Everyone on board please to support what should be a wonderful opportunity to share with our brothers all that is going on in Knoxville to preserve Civil War history.  Following is a link to the Pre-Registration Form:

Headstone Dedication for Union Navy Veteran

A native of Siena,  Italy, Celso Pierucci made a number of contributions to the Union Army as Assistant Surgeon and Surgeon that led him around the coast to Louisiana and eventually Texas.  After a number of adventures that even included a hurricane and a trip back to Italy for family business, Pierucci eventually found his way back to a Union hospital in Kentucky where he found his wife.  He died in Knoxville, TN and was buried in an unmarked grave at Old Grey Cemetery.  The family recently found the grave and that of his wife, received VA markers and have asked us to provide a “big, booming” ceremony in honor of his ancestor.  I think we can prod his direct male descendant into SUVCW membership.  We are already asking for support from the William Blount Junior ROTC, the Boy Scouts and the 8th Volunteer Re-enactors.

19-20 May 2018

Smoky Mountain Scottish Festival and Games

A great local event that seems to grow every year.  An opportunity to put our tent and table up and educate large crowds about East Tennessee in the Civil War.

28 May 2018 Memorial Day Holiday

Celebrate the Memorial Day holiday at Knoxville National Cemetery in Knoxville, TN  It is the 150th anniversary of General Logan’s order establishing Memorial Day.  We need to make our event very special.  Planning an event very similar to last year with the DUVCW and the 79th Highlanders.  Will need volunteers to participate.

30 May 2018 Memorial Day

Celebrate Memorial Day on the day set aside by General Logan in his order.  Traditionally we have done a headstone re-dedication service at the grave site of our camp namesake, Major Will McTeer.
